5. DESCRIPTION OF PRODUCT
Fruits of Jinghe Medlar are big and full. Fresh ones are diamond- or spindle-shaped,
dried ones bright red or purple. Fruits of Jinghe Medlar have thin skin, much pulp,
pure and sweet taste, and no bitter or astringent taste at all. Dried ones can form a ball
when squeezed and become loose again when the process is stopped.
Fruits of Xinjiang Jinghe Medlar are bright with abundant sugar, vitamins, amino
acids, and trace elements. Therefore, Xinjiang Jinghe Medlar lists among the best
varieties in China, representing featured forestry and fruit growing in Xinjiang. Fruits
boost moisture less than 17.0%, ash less than 4.3%, sugar more than 35.0%, protein
less than 21.5%, and fat less than 10.5%.
6. CONCISE DEFINITION OF THE GEOGRAPHICAL AREA
Jinghe County is located in the northwestern Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region,
near the southwestern border of Junggar Basin and at the northern foot of Mount
Borohoro, a branch range of Mount Tianshan. It borders Wusu City on the east, Nilka
County and Yining County on the south, Bole City on the west, and Toli County of
Tuscaloosa City on the north. It is located 81°46′-83°51′ east longitude, and
44°00′-45°10′ north latitude. The county is about 166 km from the east to the west,
about 134 km from the north to the south, covering a total area of 11,275 square
kilometers, about 37% of Bortala Mongol Autonomous Prefecture. Protecting areas of
Jinghe Medlar by geographical indication includes Toli Township, Daheyanzi Town,
Bajiahu Farm, Akqi farm, Mangding Township, Toto Township, together six
townships/towns/farms and 56 central villages. Jinghe Medlar is cultivated in an area
of 107,300 mu, with an annual output of 13,000 tons and value of 420 million RMB.
7. LINK WITH THE GEOGRAPHICAL AREA
Jinghe County is located at mid-latitude region and inner Eurasia. The planting areas
of medlars are distributed on the alluvial plain before Mount Tianshan and the
lacustrine plain of the Aibi Lake, where at the same time is world’s recognized golden
area for planting fruits. It features north temperate arid desert and continental climate;
with the warm current from the Indian Ocean and the cold air mass from Siberia
meeting here, a special microclimate is formed; in Jinghe County, the multi-year
average frost-free period is 175 days, the year-round rainfall amount is 90~150mm;
sunshine duration is long, net photosynthetic intensity is high, and the percentage of
sunshine is 61%~64%; sunshine duration during the growth period of medlars (April
to October) is more than 200 hours, the annual total solar radiation is 130km/sq.cm,
and accumulative temperature≥10℃ is 3500℃; the average relative air humidity is
lower than other regions by 10 percentage points; average temperature from June to
August is above 25℃; during fruit inflating stage, the light and heat resources are
ample with the average sunshine duration of more than 10 hours a day and diurnal
temperature variation larger than 20℃; the annual average rainfall amount is
particularly suitable for the growth, especially the coloring, sugar accumulation and
carbohydrate formation of medlars; as a result, the medlars planted here have round,
fleshy and sweet fruits. The soils are mainly alkaline sandy soils which are flat and
loose and have good permeability; the organic materials’ content is above 1.2, the pH
value is 8-9, and there is no pesticide residue or excessive amount of heavy metal ions,
extremely beneficial for growing medlars; the irrigation water stems from the melted
snow of Mount Tianshan which is rich in minerals and helpful to the growth of crops.
8. SPECIFIC RULES CONCERNING LABELLING AND USING (IF ANY)
Producers who intend to put registered and protected mark of Jinghe Medlar
geographical indication on the products or packages shall apply to the Medlar
Association of Jinghe County, holder of this registration certificate. The production of
the medlar and the use of the mark shall meet relevant requirements. Product should
be identified with its name and the public sign of geographical identification for agriproducts
