5. DESCRIPTION OF PRODUCT
In the Yellow River Irrigation Area of Ningxia, the rice (representative variety:
Ningjing No. 43) is harvested only once a year. Ningxia rice is crystal clear and has
been appraised as “the pearl rice” and “the tribute rice in north”. It has such
characteristics as being oval-shaped, pure-colored, glossy, and fragrant. The head rice
rate is ≥65%, chalky rice rate is ≤10%, amylase content is 15%-18%. If it is
cooked, it looks as white as snow, crystal-clear, and tastes glutinous but not greasy,
which is delicious. The cooked rice won’t harden even when it chills down.
6. CONCISE DEFINITION OF THE GEOGRAPHICAL AREA
Ningxia rice is produced in the Yellow River Irrigation Area of Ningxia, including
Shapotou District, Zhongning County, Qingtongxia City, Litong District, Yongning
County, Xingqing District, Helan County, Pinglou County, and Ningxia Agricultural
Reclamation Group, with a total area of 66700 ha. The area has a longitude range of
105°00′ to 106°08′E and a latitude range of 37°04′ to 39°05′N.
7. LINK WITH THE GEOGRAPHICAL AREA
The Ningxia Yellow River Irrigation Area is an ancient rice planting area in Northern
China; it is located at the upper and middle reach of the Yellow River Basin where the
natural conditions are favorable. Started in the late 6th century B.C. rice planting has
had a history of more than 1400 years. This area has been regarded as the best
ecological area for japonica rice planting in national rice ecological division, and
enjoyed the reputation as “the area enriched by the Yellow River” and “a heavenly
plantation in frontier area”. The annual rainfall amount is about 200mm, sunshine
duration is more than 3000 hours in average, effective accumulative temperature is
more than 3000℃, diurnal temperature variation is as high as 15℃, and the frost-free
period is about 160 days; the soil here and the Yellow River water both exhibit
alkalescence, and the rice heading filling period just coincides with the most shining
period, which are beneficial for rice to grow and accumulate and transfer dry
substance. Taking the outstanding features and profound cultural connotation of
Ningxia rice as an opportunity, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region has been focusing
on improving the product’s brand connotation, seeking more high-end markets at
home and abroad and promoting industry upgrading by adopting a range of supportive
measures and integrating advantageous resources.
8. SPECIFIC RULES CONCERNING LABELLING AND USING (IF ANY)
The producers in the geographical area mentioned above, who want to use
geographical labels on the protected products or its packages of Ningxia rice, must
make application to the registration owner, Ningxia High Quality Rice
Industrialization Association, for a permit, and to use the label properly, i.e. to
produce and use the label in accordance with the relevant requirements, and in a way
of combining products name and public sign of geographical label.
